Air India’s Narrowbody Fleet
Air India’s narrowbody fleet is all Airbus, from the A320 family. These single-aisle jets fly domestic routes across India and shorter international routes.
- A320neo (84): by far the largest type in the fleet. It uses new-generation engines and is the same family that IndiGo flies. Our A320neo vs 737 MAX 8 comparison explains how it differs from Boeing’s rival.
- A321neo (10): the longer version of the A320neo, with room for more passengers.
- A321ceo (8), A320ceo (4) and A319 (3): older versions with the previous generation of engines (“ceo” means current engine option).

Air India’s Widebody Fleet
Air India has 61 twin-aisle widebody jets: 26 Boeing 787-8s, 19 Boeing 777-300ERs, 10 Boeing 787-9s and 6 Airbus A350-900s. They fly its long-haul international routes.
Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (26)
The 787-8 is Air India’s most numerous widebody. In April 2026 Air India unveiled its first retrofitted 787-8, VT-ANT, after a nose-to-tail cabin refresh at Boeing’s Modification Center in Victorville, California. Air India says it is the first of 26 B787 aircraft to be refitted.
- Business: 20 private suites in a 1-2-1 layout, with sliding doors and fully flat 79-inch beds
- Premium economy: 25 seats in a 2-3-2 layout, with 38-inch pitch
- Economy: 205 seats in a 3-3-3 layout, with 31 to 32-inch pitch
The retrofit changed the aircraft from a two-class to a three-class layout. Air India says the first aircraft took about 12,825 man-hours over 45 days.

Boeing 777-300ER (19)
The 777-300ER is the biggest aircraft in the Air India fleet by size, and Air India has 19 of them.

Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner (10)
The 787-9 is a longer version of the 787-8. Air India received its first brand-new, made-for-Air India 787-9 in January 2026 and put it on the Mumbai to Frankfurt route from 1 February 2026, according to Air India.
Airbus A350-900 (6)
Air India calls its A350 “India’s first A350” on its fleet page. It had 6 A350-900s in September 2026 and has ordered 50 A350s in total. For how it compares with the Dreamliner, see our 787-9 vs A350-900 comparison.
Air India Aircraft Orders
In 2023 Air India placed firm orders for 470 aircraft, 220 of them from Boeing and the rest from Airbus. It has added more since:
- Airbus: orders placed in 2023, with an addition in 2024, now total 50 twin-aisle A350s and 300 single-aisle A320-family jets (210 A321neos and 90 A320neos), according to Air India.
- A321XLR: in January 2026 Air India converted 15 of its A321neo orders to the longer-range A321XLR, with deliveries expected between 2029 and 2030.
- Boeing: in January 2026 Air India ordered 30 more, 20 737-8s and 10 737-10s, taking its total Boeing orders to 250. It said 198 new Boeing aircraft were still to come.
Many of the new Boeing 737s go to Air India Express. By January 2026, Air India had received 52 aircraft from its 2023 Boeing order, including 51 737-8s flying with Air India Express and one 787-9.
Air India vs Air India Express
Air India Express is the Air India group’s value (low-cost) carrier. Its fleet includes the Boeing 737-8s from Air India’s 2023 order, and it is counted separately, so its aircraft are not in the 170-aircraft figure above. If you are comparing Indian airlines, see our IndiGo fleet guide: IndiGo flies mostly Airbus A320-family jets.
