By Ganesh KolekarPublished

Summary

  • Aeromexico will start daily nonstop flights from Mexico City to Orange County on 11 January 2027, Fort Lauderdale on 14 January and Portland on 21 January
  • All three use 166-seat Boeing 737 MAX 8s and are sold by both Aeromexico and Delta, whose joint network from Mexico City will reach 27 US destinations
  • The routes follow the US Department of Transportation’s decision this month to revoke an October 2025 order that had blocked new Mexican flights to the US

MEXICO CITY, Mexico, 26 October 2026 – Aeromexico and its US partner Delta Air Lines have announced three new daily nonstop routes from Mexico City to Orange County in California, Fort Lauderdale in Florida and Portland in Oregon, starting in January 2027. Tickets are on sale through both airlines, according to the joint announcement.

The announcement comes a week after the US Department of Transportation (DOT) lifted a year-old order that had frozen growth by Mexican airlines. FlightGlobal reported the plan on 27 October, linking it to the DOT decision.

The new flights

According to the schedule published by the airlines, which they say may change, all three routes run daily and year-round:

  • Orange County (John Wayne Airport, SNA): from 11 January 2027, leaving Mexico City at 09:15 and Orange County at 13:00
  • Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood (FLL): from 14 January 2027, leaving Mexico City at 09:35 and Fort Lauderdale at 15:35
  • Portland (PDX): first flight from Mexico City on 21 January 2027 at 16:15, with the first departure from Portland at 09:30 on 22 January

Aeromexico will fly the routes with Boeing 737 MAX 8s fitted with 166 seats: 16 in Premier, its business cabin, 18 in AM Plus extra-legroom economy and 132 in economy, all with seatback entertainment. The airlines say Aeromexico will be the only carrier flying nonstop between Mexico City and each of the three cities when service starts.

What the airlines and Portland said

“We are thrilled to announce three new routes to the United States,” said Giancarlo Mulinelli, Aeromexico’s senior vice president of global sales, in the announcement. The flights fall under the joint cooperation agreement between Aeromexico and Delta, which with these additions will link Mexico City with 27 US destinations.

At Portland, Port of Portland chief aviation officer Dan Pippenger said the demand “affirms our region’s position as a world-class destination for travel, business, and beyond,” KEX radio reported. The airport will have 11 nonstop international destinations once the flight starts, the station said.

Why now: the DOT lifted its order

On 19 October, Aeromexico told investors in a filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission that the DOT had revoked, effective immediately, its 28 October 2025 order disapproving certain current and planned schedules of Mexican airlines to the US. According to the filing, the DOT found that steps taken by the Mexican government had addressed the concerns behind the order, and Aeromexico can again add flights from Mexico City International and Felipe Angeles International airports.

The 2025 order canceled or blocked 13 routes by Aeromexico, Volaris and Viva Aerobus, Aviacion al Dia reported at the time, citing Reuters. The DOT said then that Mexico had broken the two countries’ 2015 aviation agreement since 2022, when it revoked slots held by US airlines at Mexico City’s main airport and forced cargo airlines out of it. CAPA reports that in May 2026 the two governments signed a memorandum setting out a path to compliance, including a more transparent slot process at Mexico City.

What it means for travelers

For travelers in Southern California, South Florida and the Pacific Northwest, the routes add a nonstop option to Mexico City and onward Aeromexico connections. Passengers flying back into the US clear customs at their arrival airport, where programs such as Global Entry can speed things up; see our TSA PreCheck vs Global Entry guide. Aeromexico and Delta are both members of SkyTeam, explained in our airline alliances guide.
