Noida International Airport (Jewar): Flights, Terminal, How to Reach and Future Plans

Delhi NCR finally has a second airport. Noida International Airport, also called Jewar Airport, opened for commercial flights on 15 June 2026. It sits at Jewar in western Uttar Pradesh, about 66 km in a straight line from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport, and is planned to grow to 70 million passengers a year.

Quick facts: airport code DXN; one 3,900 m runway; a first terminal for 12 million passengers a year; IndiGo and Akasa Air flying domestic routes; road access via the Yamuna Expressway, with metro and rail links still planned. In October 2026 the Uttar Pradesh cabinet approved renaming it Narendra Modi International Airport.

Below we explain everything step by step: the long history, the terminal and runway, airlines and routes, how to get there, the expansion plan, and the open issues. For Mumbai’s new second airport, see our guide to Navi Mumbai International Airport.

A 25-Year Journey

According to Wikipedia, the airport was first proposed in 2001 as the Taj International Aviation Hub by then Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Rajnath Singh. For years it was stuck, partly because it was close to Delhi’s airport, whose concession gave it a right of first refusal on a nearby airport. At one point the project was considered for Agra, before it moved back to Jewar in 2014.

The airport was originally meant to open in 2022, so it arrived about four years late, a familiar story for big Indian airport projects.

Runway, Terminal and Design

Phase 1 has one runway, 10/28, which is 3,900 m long and 45 m wide, with an instrument landing system and lighting for 24-hour operations. That is long enough for large widebody jets. The airport has parking for 24 Code C aircraft (the size of an A320 or 737) and two Code D/F stands for big widebodies, and Category 9 airport fire and rescue cover.

The Terminal 1 building covers 101,590 m2 with 28 apron stands. It was designed by a consortium of Grimshaw, Nordic – Office of Architecture, Haptic and STUP, chosen through a design competition in 2020. Wikipedia describes design elements inspired by Indian ghats and havelis, and green spaces inside the building, including a landscaped courtyard that brings in daylight and fresh air. The design won the Architectural Review Future Projects Award in 2022.

The airport aims for carbon net-zero operations. Its ground handler has said all its ground equipment will be electric, the airport has airside EV charging, and Tata Power has agreed to supply wind and solar power.

Cargo and maintenance

A multi-modal cargo hub, developed by Air India SATS, is designed to handle over 250,000 tonnes a year at first and up to about 1.8 million tonnes later. The airport also has a 40-acre aircraft maintenance area, and in March 2026 Akasa Air announced plans for its first maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility there.

Airlines and Routes

In October 2026, two airlines fly from Noida International Airport, both on domestic routes:

AirlineDestinations (October 2026)
IndiGoAmritsar, Bareilly, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Dharamshala, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Jodhpur, Kishangarh, Lucknow, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pantnagar, Srinagar, Udaipur
Akasa AirBengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, Navi Mumbai

IndiGo is the launch carrier and flies most routes. Interestingly, both airlines link Noida with Mumbai’s new airport, so you can now fly between Delhi NCR’s and Mumbai’s second airports. For the aircraft you will fly on, see our IndiGo fleet guide and 737 MAX 8 review (Akasa Air flies an all-Boeing 737 MAX fleet).

The airport is built as an international airport, but no international routes appear in the October 2026 lists.

How to Reach Noida International Airport

For now, getting there is mainly by road. Wikipedia notes that reaching the airport from central Delhi and Noida remains a concern, because rail links are still being planned.

By road

  • Yamuna Expressway: the main road access. NH 44 and NH 34 also serve the region.
  • Buses: the operator has agreements with Uttarakhand, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh state transport, for services to cities such as Dehradun, Haridwar, Gurgaon, Faridabad, Chandigarh, Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra, Aligarh and Mathura.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: Uber has dedicated pick-up zones, and Mahindra Logistics Mobility runs an all-electric taxi fleet from the terminal.
  • Coming soon: a 31.42 km corridor from the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway spur, approved in March 2026, will improve access from South Delhi, Faridabad and Gurugram. A 25 km road from Greater Noida West was approved in October 2025.

By metro and rail (planned)

LinkStatus
Greater Noida to Noida Airport Metro (Aqua Line extension)Planned
Ballabhgarh to Noida Airport Metro (Violet Line extension)Proposed
Ghaziabad to Jewar RRTS (71.1 km, 11 stations)Planned
Palwal to Noida Airport to Khurja railway (61 km)Proposed
Delhi to Varanasi high-speed rail, with a Noida Airport stationPlanned

A 20-acre Ground Transportation Centre between Terminal 1 and the future Terminal 2 will bring taxis, buses and, later, metro and Namo Bharat stations together.

What It Means for Delhi NCR

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is one of the world’s busiest; see our list of the busiest airports in the world. A second airport gives airlines room to add flights, and passengers from Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and western Uttar Pradesh a closer option. Mumbai has followed the same path with Navi Mumbai, which opened in December 2025.

For travellers, the main trade-off today is access: if you live in central or west Delhi, the trip to Jewar is long until the planned rail links arrive. If you live in east NCR or western UP, it can be much easier than Delhi. Always check which airport your ticket is from; Noida is DXN and Delhi is DEL. Our regional airlines and UDAN guides explain how smaller routes from airports like these are growing.

Open Issues

  • Connectivity: distance from Delhi and Noida, with metro and rail links still at the planning stage.
  • Environment: environmentalists have raised concerns about the Dhanauri wetlands, about 15 km from the airport, which had not received protection status as of early 2024.
  • Land and resettlement: land acquisition and rehabilitation have been contentious; in March 2026 some displaced farmers said promised jobs and rehabilitation had not been fully delivered.

Key Takeaways

  • Noida International Airport (DXN) at Jewar opened for commercial flights on 15 June 2026, about four years late.
  • Phase 1 has a 3,900 m runway and a terminal for 12 million passengers a year; four phases could take it to 70 million.
  • IndiGo and Akasa Air fly domestic routes; no international flights yet.
  • Access is mainly by road for now; metro, RRTS and high-speed rail links are planned.
  • Uttar Pradesh has approved renaming it Narendra Modi International Airport.
